There’s something about hiking along the southern coast of Albania that never gets old. Maybe it’s the way the Ionian Sea shimmers under the afternoon sun, or how the olive trees twist along the hills like they’ve been there for centuries (because, well, they have). Whatever it is, if you love the outdoors—even just a little—you’re going to want to experience these trails for yourself.

I’ve lived in Saranda for years, and even though I spend most of my time showing beachfront properties and seaview apartments to clients, I always find an excuse to sneak in a coastal hike. Sometimes, it’s just a quick walk before a property viewing in Borsh. Other times, I convince a client to join me—because what better way to get a feel for this place than by seeing it from the top of a cliff, looking out over the endless blue?

If you’re thinking about making the Albanian Riviera your home (or at least your second home), these hikes will give you a whole new appreciation for the region. And if you’re just visiting, well—let’s just say, don’t forget your camera.

1. The Llogara Pass to Dhërmi Coastal Trail

Let’s start with a classic. The Llogara Pass is famous for its jaw-dropping views—if you’ve driven it before, you know what I mean. That moment when you come around a bend and suddenly the entire Ionian coastline stretches out in front of you? Unreal.

From the pass, there’s a stunning trail that winds its way down toward Dhërmi, a coastal village known for its white stone houses and impossibly clear water. It’s a mix of pine forests, rocky paths, and the occasional wild goat (don’t be surprised if one stares you down like you’re the visitor).

Pro tip: Stop at one of the small mountain restaurants before you start hiking. There’s one in Llogara that serves homemade fërgesë—rich, creamy, and exactly what you need before a long walk.

2. The Secret Beaches of Gjipe

Gjipe Beach isn’t exactly a secret anymore, but the hike to get there still feels like an adventure. You start from the main road near Vuno, winding down through a canyon until suddenly—there it is. A perfect stretch of sand, hidden between towering cliffs, with water so blue it looks like a postcard.

A lot of people drive most of the way, but trust me, hiking in is the way to go. You get to see the wild side of this coastline—the kind of rugged beauty that makes you forget you’re just a short drive from Saranda. And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can keep going past Gjipe to find even smaller, untouched coves.

3. The Borsh to Qeparo Cliffside Trail

This one is personal. Last week, I showed a client a luxury villa in Borsh (this one, actually— Villa 34 ) and after the viewing, we decided to take a short hike toward Qeparo. It wasn’t planned, but honestly, those spontaneous moments are the best part of my job.

This trail follows the coastline, giving you insane views of the sea on one side and the old stone villages on the other. If you’ve never been to Upper Qeparo, you have to go. It’s one of those places that feels frozen in time—narrow cobblestone streets, crumbling stone houses with flowers spilling over the balconies, and an occasional old man sitting outside his home, ready to tell you stories if you have the time to listen.

4. Butrint National Park: A Walk Through History

Okay, this one is less of a “hike” and more of a long, scenic walk, but it’s too special not to include. Butrint is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it’s got everything—ancient ruins, a Venetian castle, a lagoon filled with pelicans, and trails that take you through it all.

Every time I come here, I notice something new. The last time, I was with a couple looking for Saranda apartments for sale, and we took a detour to Butrint after a morning of property viewings. They were blown away. I mean, where else can you walk through a 2,500-year-old amphitheater and then end the day eating fresh seafood by the water?

(Also, side note: If you ever find yourself near Butrint in the late afternoon, take the tiny ferry across the Vivari Channel. It’s a five-minute ride, and it feels like stepping into another era.)

5. The Forgotten Trail to Kakome Bay

Most tourists don’t make it to Kakome Bay, and honestly, I kind of hope it stays that way. It’s one of those places that still feels untouched. The trail starts near the village of Krane and takes you through rolling hills before dropping down to the most perfect, secluded bay. The water here is ridiculously clear, and on a quiet day, you might have the whole place to yourself.

I always tell people that southern Albania is full of surprises. One minute, you’re looking at beachfront properties in Saranda, thinking about real estate investments. The next, you’re standing on a hidden beach, wondering how this place isn’t world-famous yet.

Why Hiking and Real Estate Go Hand in Hand

I know, I know—what does hiking have to do with buying property? A lot, actually. When people come to me looking for a home in Albania, they’re not just buying a house. They’re investing in a lifestyle. And part of that lifestyle is waking up to sea views, exploring untouched landscapes, and feeling like you’ve discovered something special.

That’s why I love showing clients places like Borsh, where they can own a villa with mountain views ( like these ones ) and still be minutes away from the beach. Or Saranda, where they can find affordable properties with the best Mediterranean views.

Southern Albania isn’t just a place to live—it’s a place to experience. And if you take one of these hikes, you’ll see exactly what I mean.
